The illustrated masterplan for Muse formed part of an invited competition entry for the residential element of the Rolls Royce plant redevelopment in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. The submission sought to develop a masterplan that would accommodate two, three, four and five bedroom housing in a form consistent with the ‘urban’ character being sought, yet which also met the expectations of national house builders and their prospective purchasers. The need to integrate a mix of housing for sale, shared equity and affordable rent within each development phase was also recognised.

The masterplan makes provision for a variety of spaces ranging from small and intimate through to major spaces where a diverse mix of supporting services and facilities could be located. The connected network of spaces formed a logical sequence of events between destinations on key desire lines. The network also extended beyond the site, connecting both to the adjacent existing housing and the countryside beyond the site boundary. The environment was designed to be easy to navigate and provide opportunities to introduce areas of local amenity, places to meet and accommodate public transport networks as well as vehicle and pedestrian access.
