Another BBA Win at the RICS Awards

After our RICS award win at the start of May for Greenwich Gardens, we are pleased to announce that Brewster Bye Architects have won another RICS award, this time for Headingley Enterprise and Arts Centre (HEART).

HEART was the winner in the Community Benefit category and it was also shortlisted in the Design Through Innovation category.

Occupying the former primary school building in the Bennett Road conservation area of Headingley, HEART is a community resource that offers a variety of high-quality arts, office and meeting spaces, complimented by a highly popular café. The refurbishment works included a new glazed reception area linking the two existing buildings and a new mezzanine floor allowing additional office space to be located within the roof void.

The design was modelled to allow the completed building to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating, employing a photovoltaic array, solar hot-water, rainwater harvesting and low-energy lighting throughout. The design team and contractor worked together to preserve and enhance the existing architectural qualities of this Victorian former school building, whilst injecting a new vitality such an exciting project brings.

The judges said: “HEART was a worthy winner of this award. A group of dedicated, resourceful and passionately committed people from the local community had a vision of transforming the former school into a community facility. Over £100,000 was raised by way of a share issue from a local community committed to the scheme, and grants were obtained and efficiently used. The result is a striking facility which has more than achieved the community’s vision. We were particularly impressed with the constant use that the local residents were making of the whole of the facility, the mix of business start-ups and downsizers, and extensive and varied programme of events.” – RICS awards literature

HEART will be entered into the national RICS Awards Grand Final, to be held on Friday 17th Oct at The Savoy Hotel in London.

We still have two other projects that have been shortlisted for awards in the coming months, here’s hoping we can repeat this success!
