The Plas Coch Campus Student Residence for Glyndwr University student apartments scheme was an open design competition where Brewster Bye Architects were shortlisted in the final ten of over one hundred entries. The core of our proposal was to create a sustainable village community including 550 apartments, three common rooms and a students' union. The building was designed as a snake; shaping a series of courtyard spaces each served by an activity hub and all relating to the main ‘village centre’. The scheme was designed to be carbon neutral; utilising geo-thermal and heat recovery systems with a large anaerobic digester plant chosen to provide a new energy source.
