Kirkstall Hill is located approximately 2 miles out to the west of Leeds city centre on a large prominent site adjacent to the A65. Planning approval was sought for a mixed use scheme comprising 700 apartments, 100,000 sq ft of health care, 150,000sqft of retail and 1000 car parking spaces. The steeply sloping site was to form the catalyst for the creation of a new district centre within Kirkstall. The master plan looked to create a series of public spaces which cascaded down the hill; reducing the scale and massing of the proposed accommodation. As a key part of the detailed planning process, numerous public consultations were carried out in order that a development which reflects the needs and aspirations of the local community could be achieved. Key aspects included the relocation of such existing facilities as the Post Office Workers Club, restaurants, cafes, a gym, a library and a nursery.
