Sowerby Gateway

The Sowerby Gateway competition submission concerned the first phase of a masterplan for the development of a new mixed use area on the edge of Thirsk in North Yorkshire. In developing a large greenfield site for housing, we focused on the need to establish a “sense of place” and so envisaged the creation of a new village or hamlet rather than simply a housing estate. Our methodology was founded on a narrative which imagined how this hamlet may have originally come into being and, over many centuries, had developed in size and complexity to its present day form. This narrative provided an underlying historical context which gave not only an organic structure to the layout but also allowed for the coherent design of architectural treatments and materials selection.
