Brewster Bye Architects entry to the architectural competition for the ‘Home Zone’ of the Northshore redevelopment is intended to reinvigorate the idea of family housing. Our master plan is based on providing contemporary terraces within green boulevards. The rhythm of the housing is interrupted by winter gardens which complement the private gardens, public play areas and allotments. The proposal contains three housing typologies intended to cater for different budget, lifestyle and spatial requirements. Housing typology 1 is a compact starter home. Density is increased without compromising on space and style by incorporating a flexible open plan living space, galleried play/study area and individual external ‘wallpaper’. Housing typology 2 is aimed at the larger family and is the ultimate in flexible accommodation. This house can easily be extended from 3 to 5 bedrooms with a projecting bay or top floor extension. Housing typology 3 is the lifestyle home for families where quality of space is as important as the amount of accommodation. The home office, daylight / ventilation ‘lantern’ and building geometry combine to create a unique home.
