| The concept mimics the environments ability to adapt and evolve; a living building; built from the earth and closely surrounded by the environment providing a healthy habitat for its occupants. The design was born through the consideration of simple forms that could be repeated and adapted with ease. A modular timber frame allows for an arrangement of cubes accommodating specific requirements including orientation, renewable technologies and high density development. The layout incorporates a ground floor study/workspace, WC and bedroom which by the use of sliding walls can be transformed into an open plan meeting space. The first floor comprises bed and sanitary accommodation with sun spaces providing thermal buffer zones to preheat the air through solar gain. Living space on the third floor steps back to allow for the main external sun terrace which also acts as a grey water collector, whilst the greenhouse provides the opportunity for home grown food. The concept of low carbon technology has been applied realistically and, given good site orientation; the passive strategy will eradicate the need for a main heating system. Pre-fabrication and simple repetition is at the forefront of the construction strategy reducing costs whilst increasing build quality. |
