| Hellifield Peel had been ruined for over 60 years. The 14th Century Castle and scheduled monument was close to total collapse and due to its historical importance design development involved the close collaboration with English Heritage to develop a challenging scheme. The project was the first monument post World War II to be brought back into residential use and was followed closely by Channel 4’s Grand Designs and is a test case for many similar projects across the country. The finished house includes a contemporary self contained apartment within the roof with views out over the surrounding countryside. In addition a sustainable approach was taken which includes for such elements as a ground heat source pump was incorporated within the ground which supplies all the hot water for the house. |
