| Dinton Castle is a Grade II* listed Sham Castle built as an ‘eye catcher’ when viewed from the grounds of Dinton Hall. Built in 1769 by Sir John Vanhattem the building has an octagonal plan with circular towers to the east and west with a shallow lead pitched roof allowing visitors to ‘walk the leads’. Proposals involve the restoration of the folly with the creation of a contemporary 5 bedroom detached barn designed to reflect the local vernacular. Designed as a timber framed barn it is to be clad externally in timber with a thatched roof. Internally the layout is open plan on the ground floor with the first floor suspended centrally allowing views up to the underside of the roof. The new dwelling is to be developed in line English Heritages Enabling Development Policy Statement in order to offset any conservation deficit. Through further negotiations with the Local Authority an alternative site is now being sought for the enabling works, for a 10,000sqft detached dwelling which would allow for the full restoration of the folly. |
